Having Fun in Pagosa Springs

...there's lots to do!

1. Pagosah Hot Springs. The mineral hot springs led to the settling of Pagosa Springs. The hot springs were highly prized by the Navajo and Ute Indians, and ownership of them was fiercely contested. The name 'Pagosah' comes from an Indian word meaning healing waters, and the mineral springs are widely famous for their therapeutic qualities. In addition to using the waters for bathing, the town of Pagosa Springs heats much of the downtown district with geothermal heat.

2. Upper San Juan Historical Museum. A museum of the early days in Pagosa Springs.

3. Golf and Tennis. Championship-quality 27-hole golf course and tennis complex.

4. Fred Harman Art Museum. A display of the original Western paintings of famous artist, Fred Harman, creator of Red Ryder and Little Beaver. Rodeo, movie and Western memorabilia are also on display. Open daily.

5. Echo Lake State Park. The only state park in the area; the lake is kept well stocked with fish.

6. Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park. Features an up-close view of native animals, plus a museum and gift shop.

7. Treasure Falls. A 100-foot mountain waterfall at the foot of Wolf Creek Pass and just a short walk from the parking area.

8. Wolf Creek Pass and Ski Area. The top of the Continental Divide at an elevation of 10,857 feet and an average snowfall of 435 inches. Public picnic grounds and an informational display about the Continental Divide.

9. Williams Creek Reservoir. A beautiful lake in a spectacular mountain setting with excellent camping and fishing.

10. Chimney Rock Indian Ruins. Dwellings of the ancient Anasazi, a civilization that existed in this area over 1,000 years ago. Daily tours are conducted by the Forest Service.

11. Durango-Silverton Railroad. An 1882 vintage train that travels from Durango to historic Silverton, Colorado through remote areas which are accessible only by foot or horseback.

12. Ignacio. Tribal headquarters of the Southern Utes houses the Cultural Center. Fascinating displays of Indian arts & crafts.

13. Mesa Verde. Cliff dwellings of the ancient Anasazi, so old and well preserved it has become an international attraction. Stay cooler by visiting in the Spring or Autumn.

14. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. A scenic, narrow-gauge train trip across the Continental Divide from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado; North America's longest and highest narrow-gauge steam railroad.

15. Navajo Lake. Scenic lake and recreation area offering boating, sailing, water skiing, wind surfing, and fishing.

16. Creede Repertory Theatre . Renowned legitimate summer theater offering plays and musicals in an historic mining town.

There's Lots To Do...

Ballooning: Nothing is more awe-inspiring than floating the winds in a wicker basket above the lush meadows of the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Each flight is a unique experience.

Biking: Mountain biking is one of our most popular outdoor experiences. Miles of maintained mountain roads and trails offer unlimited riding for the novice or experienced rider. Bicycle tours and bicycle rentals are available locally.

Boating, Sailing, Water skiing, and Wind Surfing: All that and excellent fishing too are available at Navajo Lake, within a few minutes drive of Pagosa Springs. The Navajo State Recreation Area is located on the northern end of the lake which extends southward into New Mexico for about 35 miles.

Camping: Our area is blessed with an abundance of spectacular campsites. Congratulations on experiencing the beauty of the Upper Piedra Valley and Weminuche Wilderness!

Fishing: All ages can test their skills in our rivers, streams, beaver ponds and lakes. A valid Colorado fishing license is required except for children under 16 years old.

Hiking, Mountain and Rock Climbing: The well-marked and maintained trails in the San Juan National Forest offer a rewarding experience.
